A Twitter On "URUMI"

As one of the most awaited films of 2011,Urumi,by the top-notch director Santosh Sivan, has definitely ascended to the anticipations of film adorers. After Anandabhadram, Santosh's venture with Prithviraj has swept the board! The magical touch of Santosh as a dexterous cinematographer  makes it a spellbinding visual treat for the viewers.
I too personally had great expectations about the movie since when I came to know that Prithvi is one of the 3 producers;just a curiosity to see how his first attempt as a producer works! Santosh, along with Shankar Ramakrishnan, the script writer, has successfully articulated something that had been holed up for centuries.....

The plot is about a brave belligerent who even laid down his life to impel the Portugese intruders from his native land.Movie clearly depicts the vigour of nationalism and the verve of revenge within a passionate patriot. It also brings  back to reminisce the hardships faced by our forefathers in gaining us independence, something which is consigned to oblivion by the new generation- as one of my friends said" Gandhi  has become someone to be talked about ,not to be thought about.". Arguing that Vasco Da Gama, the Portugese merchant who came to Kerala and thus paved the way for India's foreign relations, had within him the idea of colonising, the picture puts foreward a controversial chronicle. The protagonist, Kelu, strives to take revenge on Gama but fails and meets his end. Though froze out from history, he is one among the courageous freedom fighters to whom we are doomed to pay homage, advocates director Santosh.

Despite being quite far from actuality, the Urumi crew has been successful in accomplishing the apprehension oh innovative brains. But the question is how far it  has been appealing to an average Malayalee  onlooker-one who is used to those movies that satisfy only his enjoyment yen? I perfectly agree with Prithvi who had once said that  the entertainment level of an ordinary Malayalee is very poor. The blockbuster hits which yeild sacks of profits are just senseless comic movies. They have forced us to laugh and clap at any blunder that appears on the screen. Why films like Pranchiyettan, Perumazhakkalam, Gaddama etc had to suffer the plight of being thrown out of theatres after just a week?

The problem with Keralites is that they never see movie making as a sublime art. For them it is something to engage them during their leisures. Movies should endorse entertainment but should never be stamped for that. They appear on the big screen after the hard graft of a number of men.So never deem them solely as a source of relaxation.....

As far as Urumi is concerned, it entails a great concentration from the viewer. However, I accept that some parts of the movie are a bit confusing. For eg. the appearance of Vidya Balan arouses ambiguity in an ordinary viewer. In my opinion, the characters in the movie if casted by some other actors would have been more appealing.Anyway, there's little bewilderment on the fact that Santosh has challenged the history......Good job sir!!!!
